About the Center for What Works

Our Mission

The Center for What Works is a nonprofit dedicated to building performance measurement capacity and developing a common language for the social sector to benchmark results, learn and improve.

Our Vision

To empower the sector to make better decisions and continuously improve by providing comparable outcomes frameworks and implementation tools for performance measurement and benchmarking, including a technology for the frameworks to evolve through user input and collaboration.

 Our Theory of Change

Problem: There is no meaningful industry-wide framework to compare nonprofit performance.

Assumption:  If nonprofit organizations more effectively measure their outcomes, they can better manage their performance. Once they improve systematically, they can continuously learn, thereby improving their overall impact.

Process: After researching program outcomes, WhatWorks then bridges the knowledge with the training, tools, and services to help nonprofits to implement performance measurement and report better, more useful information to funders.

Cycle Toward Continuous Improvement: WhatWorks online benchmarking service will facilitate sector-wide dissemination, while ongoing research and capacity-building provide a continuous feedback loop to allow the common performance framework to evolve from the field.
